Built in 1926 by Troon, Scotland's world-renowned designer Charles E. Clarke, El Campeon (The Champion) serves as Mission Inn's breathtaking signature course offering for the refined golfing enthusiast. El Campeon, a favorite site of many state and national events, presents a challenging classical design in the heart of beautiful Lake County, Florida.
As one of Florida's oldest courses, Mission Inn's El Campeon's charm pervades the watery 18 hole offering. In fact, water hazards can be found on no less than 13 holes of the course which encompasses a grand total of 6923 yards from the back tees. An impressive array of scenery, including several island greens scattered among the numerous lakes, and the way each hole blends so splendidly with the surrounding nature, will certainly soothe the soul while the mind is busy attempting to tame this beast of a course.
Cleverly incorporated elevation changes, a few as much as 85 feet, give the course a unique feel, especially considering its central Florida location. The 4 stars El Campeon – as honored by Golf Digest – features moderately wide rolling fairways of top quality 419 bermuda grass which are craftily spotted with deep sand bunkers in hopes of warding off those over-aggressive golfers.
For lovers of variety, El Campeon’s greens are sure to please. Each tifdwarf bermuda grass green presents a different challenge for the golfer. Even the most seasoned of pros will test their mettle when trying to tackle the undulating, sometimes seemingly unpredictable setups.
El Campeon’s signature hole, the 17th, playfully named “Devil’s Delight”, serves perhaps the course’s most stern test of golfing acumen. The double dogleg hole’s focal point is a devilish mighty oak strategically located just in front of one’s approach to the multi-tiered green, which is flanked by a water canal and beachfront bunker. Needless to say, one’s pulse will increase upon lining up for the shot. |
